Pilindavatsa was in Rājagṛha. The time approaching, he wished to go on his alms round. He went to a herdsman's house to eat. A woman in that house was weeping. He then asked the woman, "Why are you weeping?" She replied, "Ācārya, today is a festival day, and everyone has gathered to play; I have no clothes, and so I alone cannot go." Then the venerable one magically transformed various garments, jeweled necklaces, and ornaments of gold and silver, and having given them to her, he departed. The people saw her and asked her how she had obtained them, and she fully explained the circumstances. Word reached the king of the country. The king summoned the cowherd's woman and the monk. He asked the venerable one, "Where did you obtain such fine gold, the likes of which does not exist in the world?" The monk took his staff, struck the wall, and knocked on the bed, and everything was transformed into yellow gold. He said, "Where would a śūdra obtain gold? This is it." The king said, "The ācārya has great supernatural powers. Each of you may now return." (Drawn from the Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya, fascicle 29.)
