In the past, there was a multitude of people beside a river who were harmed by the water; the people were beyond count. Among them, those who escaped were one in ten thousand. A person who had escaped from the deep water went to the Buddha's place and sought to become a śramaṇa. The Buddha consented and allowed him to remain at the rear of the monastic order. Inwardly he did not reflect, thinking only that he had escaped hardship. The Buddha preached the Dharma for him and encouraged him to practice the path. At that time, that monk felt ashamed inwardly; he understood that all myriad things are impermanent, his mind opened, his understanding dawned, and he became serene and without conceptual thought. Thereupon, before the Buddha, he became an arhat. (Extracted from the Sūtra on Preaching on Becoming a Śramaṇa.)
