The Buddha told the monks managing affairs: 'The elephant and nāga are beasts, yet even they detest excessive seeking, how much more so humans! You monks must not, because of managing many affairs, demand widely without satiation, causing those faithful brāhmaṇas and householders to part with their wealth in distress' (from the seventh fascicle of the Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya; also from the third fascicle of the Mahīśāsaka Vinaya, with some differences).
