19.22

The hunter smeared honey on the tree leaves. Eating them, the deer was caught, and he brought it back. When the king heard that the deer had arrived, he burned incense and welcomed it. When the consort saw it, she went forward and embraced the deer-king. Because her attachment and defilement were heavy, this caused the deer-king's golden colour to vanish immediately. The king told the consort, 'This deer's golden colour has suddenly vanished; what should be done?' The consort said, 'This gold was an unasked-for thing. Release it and let it go.' The golden deer was Yaśas. The consort was Yaśas's mother. Suffering various torments, her craving and attachment persist to this day (Extracted from the Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya, Fascicle 1).
