"Now I give you this verse. Whenever he gets angry and disdains the food as bad, go beside him with your back turned and softly recite it so that he may hear it." Having given this instruction, he returned to his own country. After Yajñadatta had seen his master off, whenever mealtime arrived, he would get angry again as before. His wife tried reciting the verse by her husband's side. When the husband heard this verse, his heart was not pleased at all, and he thought: "Alas, this old thing has revealed my vile deeds!" From then on, he always spoke gentle words, fearing that his wife would tell others of his private secret. The Buddha told the monks: "Was the brāhmaṇa Fuluxi of the city of Vārāṇasī of that time anyone else? He was myself. As for the servant Kalaha of that time, he was the present monk Chanda. In those days he had already relied on me to mistreat others; now again, he relies on my power to mistreat others." (Drawn from the Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya, fascicle 8.)
