In a foreign country, there was a śramaṇa practicing the Way who encountered a man-eating ghost. The ghost grabbed him tightly in an embrace. The śramaṇa said, "Now that I have met with you, your mind and mine are as far apart as heaven and earth. Your mind delights in killing, whereas my mind delights in life; you are opposed to the Way." The ghost then let go of the śramaṇa and did not dare embrace him again. He immediately stepped back, apologized, and said, "It was only because of my foolishness and ignorance." (From the one-fascicle Miscellaneous Avadāna Sūtra).
