22.28

For instance, there was a novice whose heart always craved curd. Whenever various dānapatis presented curd to the Saṅgha, the novice would always receive the leftover portions. In his mind, he was attached to the pleasure and was delighted, unwilling to part with it. After his life ended, he was reborn inside a jar of leftover curd. The novice's master attained arhatship. When the Saṅgha was distributing curd, the master said: “Gently, gently! Do not harm this curd-loving novice.” The others asked: “Why do you say ‘this curd-loving novice’?” He answered: “This was originally my novice. Simply because of craving leftover curd, he was reborn in this jar.” When the master received his portion of curd, the insect came inside it. The master said: “Curd-loving one, why have you come?” He then gave the curd to it (from the Da zhidu lun, fascicle 17).
