Hearing this, the demon king felt shame within; he changed his mind and altered his conduct, thinking to cultivate the roots of goodness. He then said to King Sunaksatra, “What you have said today is rare among men. Now I release the ninety-nine kings, and I abdicate this throne. I wish your majesty to take charge and govern through the Dharma; I will lead the demon host to return to our den. As we are of the same discipline, we shall naturally meet frequently.” Thereupon they parted and each returned to their own place. The myriad people rejoiced, the realm was peaceful and secure, and they jointly practiced the ten wholesome deeds and did not cultivate evil karma. Sunaksatra accumulated practice without cessation and later attained Buddhahood; beneath the King of Trees he spoke this previous gāthā again.
