The king rejoiced immeasurably and then ordered the lamps to be lit, [saying,] 'The Dharma I sought was for the sake of realizing the Buddha way; I shall use the brightness of wisdom to illumine and awaken all beings.' When he made this vow, heaven and earth shook violently, and all trembled up to the Śuddhāvāsa heavens. Seeing this great being disregarding his physical body and life, [the devas] gathered together and descended, filling the empty sky, weeping and shedding tears like torrential rain. The lord of devas said, 'In such agonizing pain as this, is your mind not remorseful?' He answered, saying, 'It is not remorseful.' He then made a vow, saying, 'If from beginning to end my mind has not been remorseful, may [my flesh] all be restored.' Upon the thought, it was restored. The king at that time was none other than the Buddha himself. (Drawn from the first fascicle of the Damamūkanidāna Sūtra.)
