Long ago, there was a king named Wulie. In his country there was a tree named Xiubotihuan. Its circumference was five hundred and sixty li; the roots below had a perimeter of eight hundred and forty li; its height was four thousand li; and its branches spread out around for two thousand li. The tree bore five kinds of fruit, and the path had five faces. At the first face, the king and the singing girls of the palace ate its fruit together. At the second face, the great ministers and the hundred officials ate it together. At the third face, the common people ate it together. At the fourth face, the śramaṇas and practitioners of the Way ate it together. At the fifth face, flying birds, insects, and beasts ate it together. The fruits were all the size of a two-dou vessel, and their taste was like honey. There was no guard over the tree, yet the portions of fruit were not encroached upon by one another. At that time people all had a lifespan of eighty-four thousand years. The people of that time had nine kinds of illness: first, cold; second, heat; third, hunger; fourth, thirst; fifth, defecation; sixth, urination; seventh, sensual desire; eighth, eating too much; ninth, old age. Women were five hundred years old before they married (from the *Sūtra of Ānanda's Recollection*).
