The one flowing west is named Gaṅgā; the one flowing south is named Yamunā; those flowing east are two, one named Śarabhū and one named Aciravatī; the one flowing north is named Mahī. They all flow and pour into the ocean. Since the establishment of heaven and earth, rain has fallen and rivers have poured in, yet the water neither increases nor decreases. Casting off their former names, they merge into the water of the one ocean (from the *Sūtra on the Eight Virtues of the Ocean*).
