In ancient times in the city of Rājagṛha, there was an elder named Sudhana, who was very rich with abundant wealth. His son was named Sumati. When their father died, the younger brother was named Yaśomati. [The elder brother] devised a plan not to divide the property with the younger brother, thinking that he should kill him. The elder brother said to the younger brother, "Let us go together to the top of Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain to discuss something." He then took his younger brother by the hand and went up to a precipitous cliff, whereupon he pushed him to the bottom and crushed him with stones, so that he immediately died. Sudhana was the true father King Śuddhodana; Sumati was myself; and Yaśomati was the present Devadatta. (Extracted from the lower fascicle of the Sūtra on the Origin of Practices)
