The brāhmaṇa received the verse from the Buddha. Returning home, when he reached the gate, he first addressed the great assembly, "Listen to what I say!" and then recited the verse as above. His son was ashamed and frightened. He immediately embraced his father, brought him back into the house, rubbed his body, bathed him, covered him with clothes and blankets, and established him as the master of the house. The brāhmaṇa then thought, "That I have now attained preeminence in my noble clan is due to the grace of the śramaṇa. As our scripture says, 'If one is a teacher, one should make offerings to him as to a teacher.' I will now take supreme, fine robes, go to the Bhagavat's place, greet him face to face, and say to the Buddha, 'May you accept these robes out of pity for me.'" The Bhagavat then accepted them, and further expounded various teachings, demonstrating, instructing, clarifying, and gladdening him (extracted from the Sūtra on the Buddha Reciting a Verse for the Old Brāhmaṇa).
