There was a brāhmaṇa who asked his wife, "Are there materials for cakes in the house? I wish to join the company in making offerings to the śramaṇa Gautama." His wife said, "There are." She immediately made them, and he took them and went. He encountered the king, ministers, kṣatriyas, brāhmaṇas, and the lords of eighteen great settlements, all seated there. The brāhmaṇa did not dare to step forward. He thought, "The Buddha is an omniscient one; he must know my mind." From afar, the Buddha called him over and asked, "What is in the vessel?" He replied, "It is cakes." The Buddha said, "You may distribute them to the saṅgha of monks." He replied, "They are too few to go around." The Buddha said, "Just distribute them to the people." After one round, they were still not depleted, and even after three rounds, they had not diminished. The Buddha knew his mind and, following it, expounded the Dharma to him, so that he attained the path of a srotāpanna (extracted from the Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya, Fascicle 29; also in Fascicle 6).
