When Ugga was drunk and surrounded by female entertainers in the Great Forest of Vaiśālī, he saw from afar the Bhagavat seated among the trees, handsome and exquisite, his faculties and mind tranquil, radiant like a heap of gold. Having seen him, his drunkenness dissipated. He went to where the Bhagavat was and sat to one side. The Buddha analyzed the Four Noble Truths for him, and he attained the state of fearlessness. Prostrating with his head and face at [the Buddha's] feet, [he said,] "I take refuge in the Three Jewels, become an upāsaka, and uphold the five precepts." Returning to his residence, he told his family, "You should know now: I have received the precepts from the Bhagavat. If you take pleasure [in this], practice giving and create merit. If you do not take pleasure, return to your respective relatives; I shall release you." At that time, his principal wife said, "You have taken the precepts for life from the Bhagavat. There is a certain person; you should give me to him to be his wife." Thereupon the householder called that person, held his wife's right hand with his left hand, and holding a golden water vessel, said to the person, "I give this principal wife to you to be your wife." The man was terrified and his hair stood on end. He said to Ugga, "Does the householder wish to kill me?" He replied, "No. Having learned from the Buddha, I will practice the pure life for all my days; therefore, I give my principal wife to you. I will never change or regret it." (Extracted from the ninth fascicle of the Madhyama Āgama).
