44.32

Formerly, there was a man who saw that another's wife had a well-proportioned nose. He thought to himself: 'My wife's facial features are foremost, but I only regret that her nose is ugly. Now I shall take this nose to replace my wife's nose.' He then led the woman to a secluded spot, cut off her nose, and carried it back. He then cut off his wife's nose and affixed that woman's nose to it. Both lost their noses, and neither [nose] adhered. The crowd was astonished and scolded him, calling him truly foolish and mad. (Extracted from the Hundred Parables Sūtra, fascicle 1).
