A mother gave birth to two sons. One did not know how to swim, fell into the water, and died; the mother did not weep at all. The other knew how to swim, yet also fell into the water and perished; the mother wept bitterly for him. People said, "You did not weep for the former son, but weep for the latter son—why?" The mother said, "The former did not know how to swim, so it was expected. The latter was skilled at swimming, so it was an injustice" (from the eighth fascicle of the Ten-Fascicle Avadāna Sūtra).
