The great Raurava hell has sixteen minor hells, each five hundred yojanas in extent. Why is it called the Raurava (Crying Out) hell? The hell-wardens seize the sinners and cast them into large cauldrons, or place them into large iron pots; the scalding broth surges and boils, cooking those sinners, who howl and cry out in bitter pain and misery. They also take those sinners and fling them onto large griddles, turning them over and over to fry and scorch them, howling and crying out. Because their remaining retribution is not yet finished, it makes them not die; hence it is called Raurava. Having endured suffering for a long time, they then exit Raurava and reach the Black Sand hell, and so forth up to the Cold Ice [hell], only then does their life come to an end. Harbouring wrath and venom and committing all manner of evil deeds, one falls into the Raurava hell.
