In the distant past, there was a Buddha named Vipaśyin who resided in the city of Bandhumatī; the king was named Bandhumant. There was a brāhmaṇa named Indragiri, who was widely versed in the four Vedas, various calculations, and the brāhmaṇa precepts, and he taught five hundred youths. The king arranged an assembly to invite the Buddha, offering exquisite delicacies. Among the assembly there was a bhikṣu named Maitreya, who was ill and unable to walk for food; after the meal, [another bhikṣu] requested food for the sick one. The brahmacārin would not give it, reviling him: 'Shaven-headed śramaṇas ought only to eat horse-barley, and should not eat such sweet and delicious offerings!' At that time his disciples said, 'Indeed so.' Śāriputra, the brāhmaṇa of that time was myself; the five hundred youths were the present five hundred arhats; and that sick bhikṣu was the present Maitreya.
