The Tathāgata was roaming in the World of Abhirati. Wishing to manifest wisdom and broadly deliver [beings] without limit, he gathered with his disciples, bodhisattvas, Brahmā, Śakra, devas, and nāgas at a vihāra. He emitted the light and sound of the svastika, which was pure and reached far. The great sounds of the five dharmas were: first, the sound of delivering people through the Great Vehicle; second, the sound of delivering people without 'this' or 'that'; third, the sound of delivering people without [attachment to the path of] pratyekabuddhas; fourth, the sound of delivering people through skillful means without cutting off affective thoughts; fifth, the sound of delivering people by entering birth and death, preaching the Dharma to resolve their toils and defilements. The king of that country was named Chuliu. Together with the people, he went to the Buddha, paid homage, and said, "We have long heard that the Tathāgata expounds the Path, instructs and transforms, and rescues [beings] from birth and death without limit. My retinue and I drift in birth and death and have not yet received liberation. We pray that the Honored One deign to transform us, so that we may understand the clear Dharma." Heaven and earth shook, and they cultivated the bodhisattva practices. (Drawn from the *Sūtra on the Svastika on the Buddha's Chest*.)
