The Buddha had long been traveling through various kingdoms. The elder Sudatta longed for him thirstily, and said to the Buddha: 'May you leave behind a small object so that I may constantly make offerings to it.' The Buddha gave him hair and nails. [Sudatta] requested permission to build a stūpa, and the Buddha consented. In the city of Śrāvastī, he constructed brackets and pillars, embellishing them with painted ornamentation.
