The brahmacārin Jyotis knelt upright before Ratnagarbha Buddha with his right knee on the ground and his palms joined, and stepping forward, he said to the Buddha: "Bhagavat, I have now brought forth the mind of unexcelled awakening and developed wholesome roots. In the Dharma of the three vehicles, if my aspirations are to bring benefit to myself, let white nāga-elephants spontaneously emerge from my two hands." By the Buddha's spiritual power, nāga-elephants immediately emerged from his two hands; their color was pure white, and seven parts of their bodies touched the ground. Having seen this, he addressed them, saying: "Nāga-elephants, you should now ascend into empty space not far from here and rain the fragrant water of eight virtues everywhere over this world to awaken all sentient beings in this world. If any sentient beings encounter a single drop or smell its fragrance, they will completely sever the five hindrances—namely, lust, anger, drowsiness, restlessness, and doubt." At that time, the nāga-elephants were in empty space, traveling all around as swiftly as a strong archer shooting an arrow. After these two nāga-elephants had accomplished all these tasks, they returned and stood before the brahmacārin. At that time, Jyotis saw this and his heart greatly rejoiced.
