When Śākyamuni Buddha was a bodhisattva, he was named the Great Sārthavāha. When he was crossing the great ocean, a fierce wind destroyed the ship. He said to the merchants: "Grasp my hair, hands, and feet, and I will ferry you across." After each person had held on, he killed himself with a knife. By the law of the waters of the great ocean, it does not retain dead bodies. Immediately, a swift wind blew [the corpse] to the shore. (Extracted from the fourth fascicle of the Great Prajñāpāramitā Commentary.)
