10.49

時淨飯王聞已。即詣閻浮樹所遙見太子。在彼樹間結跏趺坐。譬如黑夜視山頂頭大聚火光出猛明焰。威德顯著炳照巍巍。如重雲間忽出明月。亦如暗室然大淨燈。時王見已生大希有奇特之心。遍體顫惶身毛悉竪。即頭頂禮於太子足。歡喜踊躍而作是言。善哉善哉。此太子大有威德。說偈讚言。

Having heard this, King Śuddhodana went directly to the rose-apple tree. From afar he saw the prince sitting cross-legged among the trees, like a great mass of fire flaring with fierce and brilliant flames atop a mountain peak on a dark night; his majesty and virtue were conspicuous, shining grand and sublime, like the bright moon suddenly emerging from dense clouds, or a great pure lamp lit in a dark room. When the king saw this, he felt that it was exceedingly rare and extraordinary; his whole body trembled and shook, his bodily hairs stood on end. He then bowed his head in homage at the prince's feet, and in great rejoicing, leaped up and said, "Splendid, splendid! This prince possesses great majesty and virtue."
