10.64

太子後於異時。從城西門出觀看園林。時作瓶天子於太子前。化作一屍臥在床上。眾人輿行無量姻親。圍繞哭泣。椎胸拍頭。聲淚如雨。大噭號慟。酸哽難聞。太子見之心懷慘惻。問馭者言。此是何人。舁行噭哭。說偈問言。

Later, at another time, the prince went out through the western gate of the city to view the gardens and forests. At that time, the devaputra Ghaṭīkāra transformed himself in front of the prince into a corpse lying on a bier. Many people carried it, and countless relatives surrounded it, weeping, beating their chests and slapping their heads, their voices and tears falling like rain, wailing loudly in anguish, choking with grief unbearable to hear. Seeing this, the prince felt profound grief and pity in his heart. He asked the charioteer, "What kind of person is this, carried along with loud weeping?" and asked in verse:
