12.47

大迦葉復言。佛問汝。若有人四神足好修可住壽一劫若減一劫。多陀阿伽度。四神足好修欲住壽一劫若減一劫。汝默然不答。問汝至三。汝故默然。汝若答。佛應住一劫若減一劫。由汝故令佛世尊早入涅槃。汝作突吉羅罪懺悔。阿難言。魔蔽我心。是故無言。我非惡心而不答佛。

Mahākāśyapa spoke again: "The Buddha asked you, 'If someone has properly cultivated the four ṛddhipādas, he may remain alive for a kalpa or slightly less than a kalpa. The Tathāgata has properly cultivated the four ṛddhipādas and wishes to remain alive for a kalpa or slightly less than a kalpa.' You remained silent and did not reply. He asked you three times, yet you still remained silent. Had you replied, the Buddha would have remained for a kalpa or slightly less than a kalpa. Because of you, the Buddha, the World-Honoured One, was made to enter nirvāṇa prematurely. Make deśanā for this duṣkṛta offense." Ānanda said: "Māra obscured my mind; on that account I was speechless. It was not with an evil mind that I failed to answer the Buddha."
