周穆王五十三年。壬申歲二月十五日平旦。暴風忽起。損舍折木地動天陰。西方白虹十二道。大史扈多曰。西方聖人滅矣。此即佛入涅槃之相也。

In the fifty-third year of King Mu of Zhou, at dawn on the fifteenth day of the second month in the year *renshen*, a violent wind suddenly arose, damaging houses, breaking trees, shaking the earth, and clouding the sky. In the west, twelve white rainbows appeared. The Grand Astrologer Hu Duo said, "The sage of the west has passed away." This was precisely the sign of the Buddha's entering nirvāṇa.
