He also asked: "Beside Xiangsi Temple in Fuzhou, there are many ancient traces carved with seal script inscriptions whose origins are unknown. What is the story behind this?"
He answered, saying: "At the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, there was a mountain spirit whose surname was Luo and personal name Ziming, a man of Shu. Formerly he had been a precept-keeping bhikṣu, but having developed hatred toward those who broke the precepts, he made various evil vows: 'May I, after death, become a great evil ghost to devour those who break precepts!' Because of this vow, he took rebirth as this mountain spirit with a large retinue. The territory he ruled over was more than five thousand li from east to west and more than two thousand li from north to south, and he devoured upwards of ten thousand people each year. This spirit had originally been the elder brother of Kāśyapa Buddha, and later his disciple. That Buddha, having pity on him, came to transform him, displaying various supernatural transformations before finally subduing him, bestowing the five precepts upon him, and causing him to remember his past lives. Consequently, he ceased devouring people. Fearing that his mind might change later, the Buddha left his footprints. King Aśoka built a pagoda over them at the mountain peak, and the spirit then hid it within the rock. The pagoda was made of white jade. That spirit is still present today. The temple and pagoda below the outer city walls were erected by King Aśoka, as seen in the Fuzhu yi (Ritual of Entrustment)."
