It is stated: For instance, ordinary mortals and those of the two vehicles see Amitābha Buddha in an impure land, whereas the bodhisattvas and others see Amitābha Buddha in a pure land. Based on these two explanations, the retribution land is wholly and purely clean, while the response land has both defilement and purity. Therefore, the Treatise on the Pure Land says: 'There are five kinds of lands: 1. The purely clean land, which exists solely in the Buddha fruit. 2. The pure-and-defiled land, meaning mostly pure and little defilement, which belongs to the eighth ground and above. 3. The equally pure-and-defiled land, which spans from the first ground up to the seventh ground. 4. The defiled-and-pure land, meaning mostly defiled and little purity, which belongs to the stages of nature prior to the grounds. 5. The mixed-defiled land, meaning those who have not yet entered the stages of nature. A person of the fifth [level] sees the last one but not the preceding four; a person of the fourth [level] sees the latter two but not the preceding three; a person of the third [level] sees the latter three but not the preceding two; a person of the second [level] sees the latter four but not the preceding one; the first, the Buddha, knows and sees all five lands above and below.'
