Bi Lan of the Qin was a native of Dongping. He had revered the Dharma from his youth. Following Murong Chui's northern expedition, he was captured by the barbarians. He fled on a single horse, and the barbarian cavalry pursuing him were about to catch up. Lan recited and remembered Avalokiteśvara with utmost devotion. Having managed to escape, he entered the deep mountains, lost his way, and became disoriented. Once more, he focused his mind in taking refuge. In the middle of the night, he saw a practitioner wearing monk's robes and holding a tin staff, who showed him the path. He thus found his way back and arrived safely at home.
