Luan Xun of the Jin was a person of unknown origins. He had revered the Dharma from his youth and once served as the Magistrate of Fuping. Earlier, he followed General Zhenglu on an expedition and met with a slight reverse. The boat was caught in flames and nearly destroyed, and the rebels pressed close. He was right in the middle of the river, with waves startling to the eye. Xun was filled with dread and thought his life was at an end, yet he still recited and remembered Avalokiteśvara. Presently, he saw a person standing alone and upright in the river, waist-deep in the water. Xun knew in his heart that his prayers had met with response. With the fire and rebels closing in, he plunged into the water to reach him. His body floated up, and his feet felt as if walking on dry ground. Soon after, the main army sent boats to rescue the routed troops, and he thus managed to be saved.
