18.42

唐吳郡陸懷素家。貞觀二十年失火屋宇總焚。爰及精廬並從煙滅。有一函金剛般若波羅蜜經獨存。經函及褾軸並盡。唯有經字竟不被燒。爾時人聞者莫不驚歎。懷素即高陽許仁則前妻之兄。仁則當時目覩。於後具自言之（右七驗出冥報記）。

In the household of Lu Haisu of Wujun in the Tang, a fire broke out in the twentieth year of Zhenguan, and the buildings were completely consumed; even the meditation hut was reduced to smoke and vanished. A single case of the Diamond Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra alone survived: although the case, wrappers, and rollers were all destroyed, the characters of the sūtra were not burned at all. Everyone who heard of it at that time was astonished and filled with admiration. Haisu was the elder brother of the late wife of Xu Renze of Gaoyang. Renze witnessed it with his own eyes at that time and later related the entire affair himself. (The above seven verified records are from the Mingbao ji.)
