The fifth explains the heterodox and orthodox. Originally, regarding this method of homage, at the beginning of the Qi dynasty, there was a Tripiṭaka master from the Western lands named Ratnamati. Seeing that these ordinary people lived in a frontier region, unfamiliar with ritual forms and possessing dispositions like monkeys and horses, his mind overflowed with compassion, and he translated the seven kinds of methods of homage. Although the text is extensive, we extract them according to necessity. From coarse to fine: contrasted with the coarse they are heterodox; contrasted with the fine they are orthodox. Thus there are seven grades, with the essential meaning resting on the final three.
