As stated in the Udānavarga: In the past, in the city of Śrāvastī, there was a woman carrying her child and holding a pitcher who went to a well to draw water. There was a man of handsome appearance sitting by the right side of the well playing a lute for his own amusement (another sūtra also says: seeing Ānanda walking with a handsome countenance, she greedily fell in love and sought to become his wife; the matter is in another sūtra). At that time, that woman was driven by excessive lust and became infatuated with that man. That man also had blazing lust and became infatuated with the woman. The woman, frantic with lust, bound the child's neck with a rope and suspended him in the well. She promptly pulled him out again, but the child had died immediately. Knotted with grief and sorrow, she cried out to heaven and wept (and so forth). Furthermore, when the Buddha was in the kingdom of Kauśāmbī, the king was named Udayana. In the kingdom of Kuru, there was a parivrājaka named Māgandika, who had a daughter whose beauty and floral radiance had few equals in the world. The father, seeing his daughter's appearance to be rare in the realm, named her Matchless (Wubi). The rulers, ministers, and prominent clans of neighbouring countries all wished to betroth her. The father replied, 'If there is a gentleman whose appearance equals that of my daughter, I shall accept him.' At that time, the Buddha was traveling in his kingdom. The parivrājaka beheld the Buddha's thirty-two marks and eighty secondary signs, his body the colour of purple-gold, majestic and grand, with unequalled radiance and deportment. Joyful at heart, he said, 'My daughter has found her match; it is truly this man!' Returning, he told his wife, 'I have found a husband for Matchless! Make haste to adorn our daughter; I shall take her there.' Husband and wife adorned her together. As the daughter walked, she swayed with floral brilliance, pearls, gems, and necklaces, illuminating the kingdom. Husband and wife together brought her to the Buddha. Along the way, the wife saw the marks, signs, and lines of the Buddha's footprints, whose radiant colours were not of this world. Knowing him to be the Lord of Heaven, she said to her husband, 'The patterns of this man's footprints are such as have never been heard of in the world. He must not be an ordinary man; he is certainly pure in himself and free from sensual desire. He will not accept us; do not bring disgrace upon yourself.' The husband said, 'How do you know that?' The wife then spoke a verse:
