23.58

復何因緣得壽命長。復何因緣身得無病。復何因緣家室和順不令別離。佛告太子。由不殺生。是故為人壽命長。由不持刀杖擊人。是故後生為人無病。由見鬪和解令喜。是故後生為人不得別離。

'Furthermore, by what cause and condition does he obtain a long lifespan? By what cause and condition is his body free from illness? By what cause and condition is his household harmonious and compliant, never separated?' The Buddha told the prince: 'Because of not killing living beings, his lifespan is long when born as a human. Because of not striking people with swords or staves, he is free from illness when born as a human later on. Because of reconciling quarrels and bringing about joy when seeing conflict, he does not suffer separation when born as a human later on.'
