Monk Fayan of Zhenji Bodhimaṇḍa in the Western Capital under the Sui was surnamed Zhang. Residing in the administrative capital, he was dedicated to exalting the Great Dharma. His brilliance and renown surpassed those of his contemporaries. Although he was thoroughly versed in all three baskets of the Tripiṭaka, he was particularly celebrated for his mastery of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra. Wherever he went to attend assemblies of the Dharma, none dared challenge his words. In the sixteenth year of the Kaihuang reign, an imperial decree appointed Fayan as leader of the assembly for the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra, dwelling at Zhenji Temple. Constantly guiding and transforming the people, when reliquary stupas were erected during the Renshou era, he was summoned to escort relics to Ruzhou. In the fourth year, an imperial decree further directed him to escort relics to Shanying Temple in Yizhou. Excavating to a depth of over ten feet, they found golden sand; when washed and refined to purity, it amounted to two sheng, shining with a radiance outshining the sun. Furthermore, an ox arrived on its own before the stupa, bent its knees and forelegs, bowed twice, and ceased. Turning around, it bowed once toward the portrait of Emperor Wen. When [the relics] were placed into the stone casket, approximately thirty thousand people witnessed five-colored celestial clouds extending over one hundred feet in length and thirty to forty feet in width, encircled by white clouds resembling fine silk gauze, poised directly in the sky above the foundation. This lasted from midday until the afternoon before dissipating. Later, five-colored clouds gathered from the four quarters, displaying the same auspicious signs as before. Furthermore, five black cranes arrived from the northwest, circled above the stupa four times, departed, and returned again. Then a white crane lingered hovering above for a long time before departing. Moreover, a five-colored serpent coiled itself outside the casket for about three feet, pointing its head toward the relics, showing no fear when disturbed. Such signs occurred several times. The Regional Inspector Zheng Shanguo submitted a memorial reporting these matters:
