As the Saṅgharakṣitāvadāna-sūtra says: In the past, the Bodhisattva manifested as a parrot and constantly dwelt in a tree. The wind blew the trees so that they rubbed against one another, and fire broke out. The fire gradually grew fierce and eventually burned a whole mountain. The parrot thought: 'Even an ordinary bird roosting in a tree would repeatedly give rise to the intention to repay kindness; how much more so for me, who have dwelt here throughout the long night—how could I not extinguish the fire?' It immediately went to the ocean, took up ocean water with its two wings, flew over the fire, and sprinkled it on the flames, or sprinkled water with its beak, darting back and forth from east to west. At that time, a benevolent deity, moved by its diligent toil, immediately extinguished the fire on its behalf.
