Further, passing one country and going northeast for more than four hundred li, one reaches the country of Śrughna, belonging to Central India. Its eastern territory borders the Gaṅgā River, and in the north it connects with high mountains. Southeast of the city, the Yamunā River emerges from the mountains in the northwest of the country and flows through its central territory. The capital overlooks the Yamunā River to the east. Outside the east gate of the great monastery west of the river, there is a stupa where the Buddha once expounded the Dharma and delivered beings. Beside it is a stupa for the Buddha's hair and nails. More than eight hundred li east of the Yamunā River, one reaches the source of the Gaṅgā, which is three to four li wide, and where it enters the sea in the southeast, it is over ten li wide. The water is deep blue in color and sweet in taste, with fine sand flowing along with the current. The common people call it 'blessed water'; bathing in it removes sins, and some make light of their lives to drown themselves in it, praying to be born in heaven to enjoy bliss, which unfailingly brings efficacious response.
