Further, passing two kingdoms and traveling southeast, one reaches the kingdom of Prayāga, belonging to Central India. Bordering the Yamunā River to the southwest of the royal city, in a bend of the river, is a stūpa where the Buddha formerly subdued non-Buddhists. There is a hair-and-nail stūpa and the site of his walking promenade. There is also the place where Bodhisattva Āryadeva composed the Śata-śāstra-vaipulya. In the city there is a heavenly temple; before its hall stands a great tree with dense foliage, where a man-eating demon dwells. Beside it, the left-over bones form mounds; all who enter the temple throw away their lives, lured by the demon to climb the tree and cast themselves down. East of the city, between the two rivers, the confluence is more than ten li wide; the land is level and fertile, covered with fine sand. From ancient times to the present, kings, grandees, and all nobles who gave away gifts invariably stopped here; hence it is called the Great Field of Giving. The Great King Śīlāditya also cultivated this practice. East of the field, at the confluence, several people drown themselves to death each day; the locals call it the place of rebirth in heaven. Those who wish to follow this practice fast for seven days and submerge themselves in the middle of the current. People flock here from near and far; even mountain apes, wild beasts, and herds of game roam to the water's edge, fast, and drown themselves. When King Śīlāditya was distributing gifts, there were two macaques; after the female was killed by dogs, the male carried her corpse and threw it into this river, and the male then starved himself for several days and died.
