Traveling five hundred li northeast from here through a great forest, sparse yet perilous, one reaches the country of Kuśinagara, which belongs to Central India. The city is desolate with few inhabitants. The stūpa at the northeast corner inside the city is the old residence of Cunda; its well is still sweet, having been dug when he prepared the offerings. Four li northwest of the city, crossing the Ajitavatī River (in Tang, "Having Gold"), near the west bank is the Śāla Grove. The two groves are several tens of paces apart, with four especially tall trees in their midst; a large brick vihāra has been made there, containing a statue of the Buddha entering nirvāṇa, lying with his head to the north. Beside it, [a stūpa] is over two hundred feet high; in front of it is a stone pillar recording the signs of the Buddha's extinction. Some say it corresponds to the fifteenth day of the third month in this land; the Sarvāstivāda says it corresponds to the eighth day of the ninth month. The various schools debate this: up to the third year of Longshuo (663 CE), 1,200 years have passed, according to the inscription on the stone pillar at the Mahābodhi Monastery; others say 1,300 years, others 1,500 years, and others say it has only just passed 900 and not yet reached 1,000. Beside the vihāra are two stūpas, erected for the Buddha's past lives when as a pheasant king he quenched a fire and as a deer he saved lives. The stūpa next to the west is where Subhadra (in Tang, "Good Manifestation") attained extinction and realization. Next is a stūpa where the Vajrapāṇi deity collapsed to the ground. Next beside it is a stūpa where the coffin was halted for seven days. Next beside it is a stūpa where Aniruddha went up to heaven to inform the Mother, who descended to weep over the Buddha. Crossing the Nairañjanā River three hundred paces north of the city, the stūpa is the place of the Buddha's *nirdahana* (in Tang, "cremation"); the earth there is now yellowish-black, mixed with ashes and charcoal, and those whose prayers resonate truly obtain relics. Next beside it is a stūpa where the Buddha manifested his two feet for Mahākāśyapa. Next is a stūpa before which a stone pillar is erected, inscribed with a record of the division of the relics among the eight kingdoms.
