Crossing the Gaṅgā River and traveling more than one hundred and fifty li northeast, one reaches the country of Vaiśālī, which belongs to Central India (in Sanskrit, the country of Vaiśālī). The capital city is ruined and dilapidated, its old foundations measuring seventy li around, with few inhabitants. The palace city is five li around. Six li northwest of the palace is a monastery stūpa, where the Vimalakīrti Sūtra was spoken. Further east is the stūpa where Śāriputra attained realization. Further east, a great stūpa is where the king obtained one portion of relics, about one hu; King Aśoka took nine sheng of them to distribute and build the other stūpas; later, another king wished to open it, but the earth shook, so he desisted. Next to the south is where monkeys dug a pond for the Buddha; west of the pond is where a troop of monkeys took the Buddha's bowl up a tree to collect honey; south of the pond is where the monkeys offered honey to the Buddha; each has a stūpa marking it. About four li northeast of the monastery is a stūpa at the site of Vimalakīrti's old residence, which still holds many divine wonders; his house was made of piled bricks, though tradition says stacked stone; it is where he preached the Dharma and manifested illness. During the Xianqing era of the Great Tang, the imperial envoy, Administrator of the Guard Wang Xuance, passed by Vimalakīrti's residence while traveling to India; measuring the foundation with his ceremonial tablet (hu), it was only ten tablets [on a side], hence it is called the 'ten-foot-square chamber' (fangzhang). Stūpas were also erected to mark the residence of the elder Ratnarāśi, the residence of Āmrapālī, and the place where the Buddha's maternal aunt entered extinction. Four li north of the monastery is a stūpa where devas and humans stood to see the Buddha off as he was about to depart for Kuśinagara. Next behind it is a stūpa where the Buddha looked back upon the city for the last time. Next is where Āmrapālī offered her garden to the Buddha. Beside it is a stūpa where the Buddha three times told Ānanda of his impending nirvāṇa. Beside that is another stūpa where the thousand sons met their parents, who are the thousand Buddhas of the Bhadrakalpa. East of the old foundations of the two-storied lecture hall is a stūpa that emits light from time to time; this is where the Buddha preached the Universal Gateway. Fifteen li southeast of the city, a great stūpa is where the seven hundred sages held the second council. On the north and south banks of the Gaṅgā River there is a stūpa on each side, where Ānanda divided his body between the two kingdoms.
