30.37

如優婆塞戒經云。爾時會中有長者子。名曰善生。白佛言。世尊。外道六師常演說法教眾生言。若能晨朝敬禮六方。則得增長壽命之財。何以故。東方之土屬于帝釋。有供養者則為護助。南方之土屬閻羅王。有供養者則為護助。西方之土屬婆樓那天。有供養者則為護助。北方之土屬拘毘羅天。有供養者則為護助。下方之土屬于火天。有供養者則為護助。上方之土屬于風天。有供養者則為護助。佛法之中頗有如是六方不耶。

As stated in the Upāsakaśīla-sūtra: At that time, in the assembly there was the son of an elder named Sujāta, who said to the Buddha, "World-Honoured One, the six non-Buddhist teachers constantly preach the doctrine and instruct sentient beings, saying: 'If in the early morning you respectfully pay homage to the six directions, then you will obtain an increase in life and wealth. Why? The land of the eastern direction belongs to Śakra, and if there is anyone who makes offerings to it, he will protect and assist them. The land of the southern direction belongs to King Yama, and if there is anyone who makes offerings to it, he will protect and assist them. The land of the western direction belongs to Varuṇa-deva, and if there is anyone who makes offerings to it, he will protect and assist them. The land of the northern direction belongs to Kubera-deva, and if there is anyone who makes offerings to it, he will protect and assist them. The land of the nadir belongs to Agni-deva, and if there is anyone who makes offerings to it, he will protect and assist them. The land of the zenith belongs to Vāyu-deva, and if there is anyone who makes offerings to it, he will protect and assist them.' Are there such six directions within the Buddha-Dharma?"
