Xu Guang lived in the era of Wu. He constantly performed illusory arts. In the marketplace, he would plant melons, dates, oranges, and chestnuts, and immediately obtain them to eat, while the goods sold by the merchants in the marketplace were all depleted and lost. Whatever he said about floods and droughts proved very accurate. He once passed by the gate of the Grand General Sun Lin, hitched up his skirts, hurried along, and spat to the left and right. When someone asked him the reason, he replied: “Blood is covering the road; it is disgustingly reeking and unbearable.” Lin heard of this and killed him, but when they severed his head, there was no blood. When Lin deposed the young emperor, set up Emperor Jing in his place, and was about to go pay respects at Jiangling, there was a great whirlwind like a granary that fell from inside a building onto Lin’s carriage, overturning and halting it. Looking back, Lin saw Xu Guang on a pine tree, clapping his hands, gesturing, and laughing derisively at him. Lin asked his attendants, but none of them saw it. Lin hated this. Shortly thereafter, Emperor Jing executed Lin, and the four brothers were put to death in a single morning. (From the Yuanhun Zhi.)
