During the Taikang era of the Jin, two carp appeared on the roof of the armory. An armory is a military storehouse containing scales and armor, which also belongs to the category of warfare. Moreover, fish are of extreme yin, whereas a roof is supreme yang. Fish appearing on a roof symbolizes extreme yin using the calamity of warfare and arms to encroach upon supreme yang. When Emperor Hui began his reign, the Empress Dowager's father Yang Jun was executed, arrows crossed through the palace gates, and the Empress was demoted to commoner status and died in solitary confinement. At the end of the Yuankang era, Empress Jia ruled arbitrarily, slandering and killing the Crown Prince, and soon she too was deposed. Thus within ten years, disasters concerning the Empress Dowager and Empress arose twice, and from then on chaos and rebellion were formed. Jing Fang's Commentary on the Changes states: “When ominous fish leave the water and fly onto the roadways, warfare will erupt in response.”
