As stated in the Daśādhyāyavinaya: When a bhikṣu fell asleep in the assembly, the Buddha said: "I permit washing the head with water." Yet if he is still asleep and cannot be trusted, bhikṣus are instructed to wash him with water using five rules: first, with compassion; second, without vexing him; third, [doing so only] when he is asleep; fourth, when his head leans against a wall; and fifth, when his legs are stretched out in sitting and yet his sleep does not cease. One is permitted to prop him up with a hand. If he still does not stop sleeping, the Buddha permits throwing a ball at him. If he still does not stop sleeping, the Buddha permits using a meditation staff. When taking the meditation staff, one should give rise to reverence, hold the staff with both hands, and place it briefly atop one's head. If someone sitting does not stop sleeping, one should rise, look for others who are asleep, and poke them with the meditation staff. After poking them, one returns to one's seat. If no one is asleep, one replaces the meditation staff in its original place and sits down. If he still does not stop sleeping, the Buddha permits using a meditation pillow. It is made by boring a hole in it; a cord is threaded through the hole, and the end of the cord is looped and hung over the ear. The meditation pillow is placed four finger-breadths in front of the forehead so that [if he nods] it falls to the ground. The Buddha said: "When the meditation pillow falls, one should rise and walk mindfully, according to the manner of a goose's walk."
