Shi Huiyun of Hongfu Temple in the capital during the Tang was surnamed Wang, a native of Taiyuan. His distant ancestors avoided turmoil and settled in Jiujiang. In his youth he delighted in the Path, and entered Dalin Temple on Mount Kuang. At that time he was twenty-five. There was Chan Master Da, who was undertaking constructions everywhere across the Jiang and Huai regions. Because the temple was dilapidated, Yun invited Da to carry out the construction to completion. At the end of the Sui dynasty, the central and outer realms were all in chaos. There was Lin Shihong, who gathered a multitude in Wuzhang and falsely proclaimed himself Emperor of Chu. There was Hu Xiucai, the Secretariat Director of Poyang, who personally led soldiers and took control of Jiujiang. Because he was moved to generate the mind [for enlightenment], he wished to replicate the auspicious Mañjuśrī image of Donglin Temple on Mount Lu. Because Yun possessed an extraordinary talent surpassing others, he ordered him to oversee the furnace and hammer. The radiant form was thereby completed, yet there were holes in two places: the neck and the flank. The assembly at the time did not understand. In that year, Xiucai was pursued by an illegitimate imperial edict. He had one hundred and twenty liang of image-colored gold, stored in a bamboo cylinder. Because the rebels swarmed like bees and there was no way to protect it, Yun entrusted it all to Cai. He also gave Cai a string of bronze recitation beads as a token of faith, that the soldiers in the military outpost might pray for blessing. Cai caught a favorable wind, hoisted the sail, and sailed forward. Midway in the river, the boat sank in the waves; all the wealth and goods were washed away, and only the people reached the shore. Regretting nothing else, he only regretted losing the image-colored gold; crying out in distress on the riverbank, his weeping did not cease, grieving deeply that his vow was unfulfilled as an obstacle of karma. In an instant, the gold cylinder followed the waves against the current, and together with the bronze beads, one after another, floating and appearing faintly, approached the shore toward Cai. Having retrieved the image-gold, the entire assembly shouted aloud, rejoicing without measure. Calculating from where it was submerged to the shore where it emerged was over thirty li; heavy yet able to float, borne against the waves to be handed over, the soldiers and populace all marveled at this miraculous resonance. When Cai later met with death, the blade opened his neck and flank, precisely matching the image. Earlier, when Cai was about to attack the rebels, he had entrusted the gold to his uncle, who carried it on a shoulder pole to flee the danger, but could not avoid having it seized by the rebels. Having lost the image-gold, they had no means to search for it. Soon, a person came from among the rebels having stolen the gold, and turned to Xiao; neither knew it was the load of gold. Xiao obtained the original gold and entrusted it to Yun to complete it. The radiant form was supremely prominent, and is now in the mountain pavilion. When the image was first cast, there was Li Wujie, who privately made a vow: 'On the day the gold is melted, I vow to burn an arm.' Because Yun completed the mold early, the casting was moved forward. On the day of completion, Li was unaware that the image had already been cast. He then dreamed that the image said: 'You previously vowed to burn an arm; why have you broken your word?' Waking from the dream, Li only then learned of it. He immediately went before the image, severed his arm with a knife, wrapped the bone in waxed cloth, and burned it as an offering. Heavenly incense drifted down, the image emitted illuminating light, and the various wondrous portents could not be fully recounted. At the beginning of the Zhenguan reign, Yun entered the capital on some business. He met Vinaya Master Shou, submitted his mind to the Vinaya discipline, and ministers and nobles, seeing his high virtue, submitted a memorial requesting that he reside at Hongfu. In the twentieth year of the Zhenguan reign, longing for his home region, he returned to his home temple in Jiujiang, where he is living at present.
