Furthermore, the Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra says: At that time, Śāriputra addressed the Buddha, saying: 'World-Honoured One! When a bodhisattva first generates the mind of unexcelled awakening, hearing that sentient beings have such practices, he is neither alarmed nor terrified; this matter is indeed difficult and inconceivable.' The Buddha said: 'Śāriputra, what do you think? Though newly born, when a lion hears a lion's roar, does it feel fear?' 'No, World-Honoured One.' 'When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva first generates the mind of unexcelled awakening, hearing of sentient beings' practices, he is also like this. Śāriputra, what do you think? Though a fire's heat is small, does it fear dry firewood?' 'No, World-Honoured One.' 'When a bodhisattva has first generated the mind of unexcelled awakening, his obtaining the fire of wisdom is also like this. Śāriputra, now I shall make an analogy by way of a non-analogy. Śāriputra, suppose a fierce fire and heaps of dry firewood set an agreement to engage in a great battle in seven days. At that time, all dry trees, fruit trees, and various branches and leaves gather together, piling up like Mount Sumeru. At that time, the fierce fire has a friend who speaks to it, saying: "Why do you not equip yourself now, seek many helpers, and gather support? You are entirely alone; how can you withstand them?" Then the fire replies: "Though the enemies are many, my power can match them; I have no need for companions." Śāriputra, the bodhisattva-mahāsattva is also like this. Though all afflictions gather together and their force is blazing, the power of the bodhisattva's wisdom can subdue and quench them. Just as a single pill of agada medicine can destroy a great poison, the bodhisattva's wisdom is also like this: a small medicine of wisdom can destroy the boundless poison of great afflictions.'
