34.38

爾時世尊告諸比丘。有二淨法能護世間。何等為二。所謂慚愧。假使世間無此二淨法者。世間亦不知有父母兄弟姊妹妻子。宗親師長尊卑之緒。顛倒渾亂如畜生趣。即說偈言。

At that time, the World-Honoured One addressed the monks: "There are two pure dharmas that can protect the world. What are the two? Namely, shame and remorse. If the world lacked these two pure dharmas, the world would not know of father and mother, brothers and sisters, wife and child, clansmen, teachers, elders, or the order of superior and inferior; it would be inverted and muddled like the realm of beasts." He then spoke a verse:
