At that time the World-Honoured One further addressed the great assembly: "When I first attained the Way, I wished to enter a river to bathe. At that time, the river deity manifested a body, holding in his hands this jewelled stūpa. Inside it was a golden casket containing an antarvāsas, a niṣīdana, and a bowl-bag, and the four canine teeth of Kāśyapa Buddha were all inside the casket. [The deity said,] 'These were entrusted to me by Kāśyapa Buddha, who bade me give them to the World-Honoured One. Now that your bath is finished, please put on this antarvāsas.' I immediately received and put it on, and the earth shook in six ways, while the four corners of the antarvāsas emitted light illuminating hundreds of thousands of koṭīs of lands. The Brahmā kings of the ten directions followed the light and came before me, addressing me saying, 'This five-strip robe of white cotton is the robe of Krakucchanda Buddha. After that Buddha's parinirvāṇa it was transmitted down in turn until it reached Rocana Buddha. After Śākyamuni Buddha enters parinirvāṇa, entrust it to the dragon king Sāgara, commanding him to make eighty thousand robes based on this Dharma robe and further erect stūpas to make offerings to maintain the bequeathed Dharma thereafter. On the four corners and the joints of the strips of this antarvāsas, svastikas are placed everywhere. This robe was the very first made in the Bhadrakalpa.' This jewelled stūpa was five inches in shape. Then the World-Honoured One opened the stūpa and revealed pearl multistoried pavilions, numbering eighty thousand, which stored the bequeathed teachings spoken by Krakucchanda Buddha. There were also three monks of that Buddha sitting in meditation. The Buddha bade Mañjuśrī: 'Take my Dharma conch, go to where those monks are, and blow the melody of the Buddha's arising in the world.' Mañjuśrī blew the conch as bidden. The monks in concentration immediately arose and asked Mañjuśrī, 'Which Buddha has now appeared in the world?' Mañjuśrī answered, 'The fourth Buddha of this Bhadrakalpa, Śākyamuni Buddha, has appeared in the world.' Those three monks all came to pay homage to the Buddha and stood to one side, saying to the Buddha: 'When Krakucchanda Buddha entered parinirvāṇa, he entrusted to us the antarvāsas, the niṣīdana, and the bowl-bag, instructing us to dwell in this stūpa until Rocana Buddha, when we would first enter nirvāṇa. Kāśyapa Buddha also entrusted to us his four canine teeth, and Śākyamuni Buddha has bestowed on us a small amount of his nails and hair, all placed within the stūpa. After the World-Honoured One enters nirvāṇa, we shall emerge from the stūpa into this Jambudvīpa and even the trichiliocosm, everywhere propagating the robes and stūpa to maintain the bequeathed Dharma thereafter.'"
