When the king heard the verse, he leaped with joy: 'Now for the sake of the Dharma I make lamps of my body, seeking neither worldly glory nor the realization of the two vehicles; by means of this merit I vow to seek the unsurpassed, truly genuine Way.' Once he made this vow, the trichiliocosm immediately shook in six ways. With a thousand lamps burning on his body, all the devas, Śakra, the Brahmā kings, cakravartins, and others came to comfort and ask him: 'With a thousand lamps burning on your body, can it be that there is no pain? Do you have any regret?' The king answered the Lord of the Devas, 'I do not consider it painful, nor do I have any regret.' 'If you have no regret, what proof is there?' The king then made a vow: 'As I have used a thousand lamps to seek the unsurpassed Way, if it is certain that I shall become a Buddha, let all wounds immediately heal!' Having spoken these words, his body was immediately restored to wholeness without wound or scar. Śakra, all the devas, kings, ministers, retinues, and countless common people, with one voice all praised him with joy and practiced the ten good deeds."
